What to do when you can't brush

Brush several times per day to help maintain a healthy smile. The best care for your mouth is to brush after every meal, as well as when you first wake up and before bed. If you're unable to brush after you've eaten, pop in a piece of sugarless gum. This will keep your breath fresh and your teeth clean.

Beware of baking soda!

Even though there is baking soda contained in many toothpaste brands, you should never use plain baking soda to brush your teeth. Baking soda is too abrasive on its own. It can wear away the important enamel on your teeth. This puts you at a higher risk for cavities.

Look at your gums for early detection of tooth decay. The gums are particularly vulnerable, as the nerves begin there. If problems are not treated, it could mean needing a root canal. Make sure you carefully observe this area, and if you notice any pain, discoloration or other changes, immediately let your dentist know.

You should act on your dentist's recommendations for tooth extraction and/or antibiotics right away. Any oral infection can actually spread to other locations in your body. Never deviate from your dental care provider's instructions for caring for an infection. Be sure to take any prescribed antibiotic medication and finish it as recommended by your dentist.

Diet and toothcare

A healthy diet goes a long way towards helping you maintain healthy teeth. Keep sugar consumption low. Both of these things have a lot to do with dental issues, especially if teeth are not brushed immediately after eating and drinking these things. Additionally, if white teeth are important to you, then you might want to remove coffee from your morning routine. Coffee will stain your teeth.

Eat fresh fruit rather than dried fruit when possible, although you may prefer the latter. Most types of dried fruit are very high in sugar content. This can make you take in more sugar and that's something you cannot do if you want healthy teeth. Eat fresh fruit instead.

If your kids like to chew their toothbrush, it is okay to just let them. Brushing right is important, but chewing on the brush can clean a little. Also, children sometimes chew on their toothbrushes because they getting used to it. If your kid is chewing on a toothbrush then they probably will allow you to help them brush afterwards.

Make your own mouthwash!

If you do not want to use mass produced mouthwash, you should consider using a natural alternative instead. Take three cups of boiling water and add 1 Tbsp of salt, then mix with 1 Tbsp of hydrogen peroxide. Finally, add 3 Tbsp of baking soda. This makes a great oral rinse.
